Too many back, neck, and extremity pain sufferers overlook their sleeping habits when looking for solutions that will bring relief. The fact is, having the right kind of pillow and mattress and sleeping with the proper posture are all important factors in maintaining your spinal health.
Whether you’re a side sleeper or a back sleeper, you want to make sure that your entire spine and neck are being properly supported. Otherwise, you may be making our back and neck pain worse.
Here are some tips to help you figure out how to make your nights more restful and your days less painful:
Give your lumbar spine proper support
If your lumbar spine isn’t supported and aligned as you sleep through the night, it could be perpetuating a back or neck problem. If you’re a side sleeper, you should put a pillow between your legs to help with support. Make sure that your top leg is aligned with or slightly behind the knee on the bottom. It’s not a good idea to sleep on your stomach when you have back issues, so opt for your side or back instead.
Buy a high-quality mattress
Memory foam is a popular feature in mattresses these days, but many chiropractors believe that it has a negative impact on back health. Look for a quality mattress, but avoid memory foam.
Find a firm pillow
The firmness of your pillow can help give your cervical spine the support it needs. If you sleep on your side, the thickness of your pillow should fill up the space between your bed and ear. If you sleep on your back, you should still be able to see your feet while lying down flat. If you can’t, you’re not getting enough support.
